Rhinestone is a material that resembles diamond and is used for jewelry. It is named after the French jeweler George Strass, who popularized it.
The name 'strass' for imitation diamonds made of glass has existed since the 18th century. Strass discovered a process where bismuth and thallium were added to soda and silicon, resulting in glass that reflected light differently, similar to diamond. This makes rhinestones sparkle more than ordinary cut glass.
The cut pieces of rhinestone, also called 'simili', were very popular, and if silver foil or colored foil was placed behind them, they sparkled even more.
Later, the 'stones' were provided with a reflective layer on the back, similar to mirrors of that time, by applying an amalgam (tin or silver amalgam) and then evaporating the mercury, leaving a reflective layer of the metal.
