How does petrified wood form?
Petrified wood typically forms when trees or parts of trees are covered by sediment, such as sand or mud, after they die. The sediment protects the wood from air exposure and decay. Over a long period of time, usually millions of years, the wood slowly decomposes and is replaced by minerals, such as silica (quartz), calcite, pyrite, and hematite, which are present in the sediment. These minerals penetrate the cells and structures of the wood, often preserving the original cellular structure of the wood, making petrified wood detailed and well-preserved fossils.
Characteristics of petrified wood:
Appearance: Petrified wood often still has the shape and appearance of wood, with clearly visible growth rings, knots, and bark. It can have various colors, ranging from brown and beige to red, blue, and even rainbow colors, depending on the minerals present in the petrified wood.
Hardness: Petrified wood is usually very hard, with a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, similar to quartz. This makes it a durable and suitable material for jewelry, decorative pieces, and other applications.
